Usir Nyamuk Cara Alami

Obat penyemprot nyamuk yang terbuat dari bahan-bahan kimiawi DEET sebenarnya tak baik untuk tubuh manusia. Disebutkan oleh situs Intent, beberapa riset menunjukkan bahwa kandungan DEET (diethyl-meta-toluamide) pada obat penyemprot terkait dengan kerusakan pada otak. Nah, daripada menggunakan zat berbahaya di rumah, lebih baik pilih yang alami, kan?

Berikut adalah beberapa zat alami yang mampu mengusir nyamuk-nyamuk membandel.

* Citronella. Ini adalah salah satu yang paling terkenal mampu mengusir nyamuk. Untuk dioleskan, pilih minyak esensial citronella murni, jangan minyak pewangi ruangan (fragrance oil). Minyak pewangi yang digunakan untuk membakar tidak cukup untuk dioleskan dan menghalau nyamuk.

* Catnip. Sejenis tumbuhan harum bernama catnip ditengarai memiliki efektivitas 10 kali lebih baik dibanding DEET dalam menghalau nyamuk.

* Minyak biji neem, yang diekstrak dari tanaman yang tumbuh di India dikabarkan lebih efektif ketimbang DEET. Riset ini dikeluarkan oleh Institut Malaria di India.

* Lavender. Minyak lavender juga memiliki wangi yang harum dan memiliki efek menenangkan, baik untuk mengusir nyamuk. Carilah minyak esensial lavender untuk dibalurkan pada tubuh. Atau, sabun beraroma lavender.

* Bawang putih. Nyamuk tak tahan bau bawang putih. Jika Anda benar-benar terganggu dengan nyamuk, coba makan banyak bawang putih, aromanya akan keluar lewat kulit Anda. Tentu jika Anda tak masalah dengan memiliki bau badan ini.

Penyebab Nyamuk Mengincar

Rumah yang panas biasanya menarik bagi nyamuk. Mungkin Anda tak tahu apa penyebabnya, dan hanya mengamati saja. Namun sebenarnya, ada banyak alasan mengapa nyamuk begitu tertarik pada manusia. Tujuh alasan di bawah ini mungkin juga Anda sadari.

1. Anda selalu memakai pakaian warna gelap. Nyamuk sejak dulu memang "diprogram" untuk memburu mamalia, yang kulit dan bulunya cenderung gelap, begitu menurut ahli entomologi  Grayson Brown, PhD. Dalam eksperimennya, pekerja laboratorium Brown mengenakan pakaian warna putih. Terbukti, nyamuk tak begitu ngebet pada mereka.

3. Anda gemar minum bir. Peminum bir ternyata 63 persen lebih menarik bagi nyamuk ketimbang peminum air putih, demikian menurut suatu penelitian di Perancis. Alkohol memang mempengaruhi bau mulut dan aroma tubuh. Meskipun begitu, masih perlu penelitian lebih lanjut apakah hal ini juga terjadi pada peminum tipe alkohol lain, seperti anggur dan koktil.

4. Anda hamil. Menurut para peneliti, ibu hamil dua kali lebih menarik daripada perempuan yang tidak hamil. Khususnya pada trimester akhir kehamilan, perempuan akan menghembuskan nafas 21 persen lebih banyak, dan ini memikat nyamuk yang memang menyukai karbondioksida dan kelembaban. Suhu tubuh ibu hamil juga cenderung lebih tinggi, sehingga lebih mudah dideteksi oleh nyamuk.

5. Anda tidak mengosongkan air di bathtub. Anda tahu kan, nyamuk tertarik dengan kubangan atau genangan air. Misalnya air hujan yang tertampung di kaleng kosong. Untuk mencegah nyamuk memasuki rumah, pastikan tidak ada genangan air di rumah, mandilah di bahttub (berendam) setidaknya sekali seminggu saja, pangkas rumput di halaman secara teratur, dan tutupi kolam renang di rumah (bila ada) saat tidak digunakan.

Waspadai Peningkatan Serangan Nyamuk

Penyebaran penyakit demam berdarah terus meluas di berbagai daerah di Tanah Air. Hal ini disebabkan perubahan cuaca yang menimbulkan banyak genangan air sebagai sarang nyamuk. Untuk itu, masyarakat diimbau mewaspadai peningkatan ka sus demam berdarah dengue dalam beberapa bulan ke depan.

Menurut Staf Pengajar Departemen Kesehatan Lingkungan Fakultas Kesehatan Masyarakat Universitas Indonesia, I Made Jaya, Jumat (27/2), di Jakarta, suhu udara dan kelembaban sangat terkait dengan penyebaran nyamuk vektor penular DBD.

"Untuk mengantisipasi ledakan jumlah kasus DBD, pemerintah dan masyarakat seharusnya memberantas sarang nyamuk dan memantau jentik-jentik nyamuk sejak awal musim hujan atau November lalu sampai Mei nanti. Jadi, perkembangbiakan nyamuk aides bisa dicegah," kata Made.

Bila ada seseorang menderita demam atau gejala demam berdarah di lingkungannya, warga diimbau agar segera melaporkan ke aparat setempat sehingga penyemprotan bisa segera dilakukan. Pada kenyataannya, penyemprotan pestisida untuk membunuh nyamuk biasanya terlambat dilakukan.

Made juga mengingatkan agar pemerintah mengantisipasi kelangkaan bahan penyemprotan baik bahan pelarut maupun pestisida. "Petugas kadang menyemprot hanya dengan solar atau menggunakan pestisida tidak sesuai dosis karena terbatasnya persediaan solar. Ini bisa memicu resistensi nyamuk sehingga penyemprotan jadi kurang efektif," ujarnya.

Sejauh ini, pemerintah pusat berupaya mempercepat ketersediaan kebutuhan mesin fog di daerah, minimal 4 unit mesin setiap kecamatan, meningkatkan kemampuan daerah dalam menangani penderita DBD. "Penyemprotan paling bagus pada jam 6-9 pagi, dan jam 4-6 sore, sesuai aktivitas terbang dan mencari makan dari nyamuk aedes pembawa virus dengue," kata Direktur Jenderal Pengendalian Penyakit dan Penyehatan Lingkungan Departemen Kesehatan, Tjandra Yoga.

Iklim Berubah, Nyamuk Makin Banyak

Perubahan iklim dikhawatirkan mempercepat pertumbuhan dan kembang biak nyamuk demam berdarah. Selain itu, perubahan iklim juga rentan membuat tempat hidup nyamuk demam berdarah semakin bertambah.

Menurut Peneliti Ilmu Lingkungan Universitas Padjadjaran Bandung, Johan Iskandar, di Bandung, Senin (2/3), perubahan iklim yang menyebabkan udara lebih hangat berperan besar meningkatkan perkembangan nyamuk demam berdarah.

Perubahan iklim membuat suatu daerah yang semula dingin dan bukan tempat yang cocok berkembang biak bagi nyamuk lantas menghangat akibat pemanasan global dan lokal. Akibatnya, banyak ditemui kasus baru di beberapa daerah menjadi rawan demam berdarah.

Hutan-hutan banyak dibuka menjadi rumah tinggal atau pertanian. Maka tidak aneh bila di dataran tinggi yang seharusnya berudara dingin kini menjadi lebih hangat dan menjadi tempat ideal bagi perkembangan nyamuk demam berdarah, katanya.

Hal yang sama dikatakan Kepala Sub Dinas Penyehatan Lingkungan Dinas Kesehatan Provinsi Jabar, Fita Rosemary. Menurut Fita, dalam keadaan udara lebih hangat, nyamuk menurut berkembang biak lebih cepat. Nyamuk bertelur lebih banyak dan menetaskan telurnya lebih cepat atau kurang dari 21 hari.

Sekarang kasus demam berdarah tidak terjadi di daerah dataran rendah tapi pengunungan yang dahulu berhawa sejuk atau dingin. Pemanasan global membuat pengunungan lebih hangat dan menjadi tempat berkembang biak yang baik bagi nyamuk, katanya. Contohnya, Kabupaten Bogor. Bulan Januari 2008 penderita hanya 608 orang tapi Januari 2009 meningkat menjadi 728.

Lifecycle of Aedes Mosquito

Dengue fever is a flu-like illness spread by the bite of an infected mosquito.

What is the infectious agent that causes dengue?
Dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever are caused by any of the dengue family of viruses. Infection with one virus does not protect a person against infection with another.

How is dengue spread?
Dengue is spread by the bite of an Aedes mosquito. The mosquito transmits the disease by biting an infected person and then biting someone else.

Where is dengue found?
Dengue viruses occur in most tropical areas of the world. Dengue is common in Africa, Asia, the Pacific, Australia, and the Americas. It is widespread in the Caribbean basin. Dengue is most common in cities but can be found in rural areas. It is rarely found in mountainous areas above 4,000 feet.

Without prompt treatment, the blood vessels can collapse, causing shock (dengue shock syndrome). Dengue hemorrhagic fever is fatal in about 5 percent of cases, mostly among children and young adults.

How soon after exposure do symptoms appear?
The time between the bite of a mosquito carrying dengue virus and the start of symptoms averages 4 to 6 days, with a range of 3 to 14 days. An infected person cannot spread the infection to other persons but can be a source of dengue virus for mosquitoes for about 6 days.

How is dengue diagnosed?
Dengue is diagnosed by a blood test.

Who is at risk for dengue?
Anyone who is bitten by an infected mosquito can get dengue fever. Risk factors for dengue hemorrhagic fever include a person's age and immune status, as well as the type of infecting virus. Aedes mosquitoes are found in Texas, Florida, and other southern states, and locally acquired dengue has been reported three times since 1980 in southern Texas.

Is dengue an emerging infectious disease?
Yes. All types of dengue virus are re-emerging worldwide and causing larger and more frequent epidemics, especially in cities in the tropics. The emergence of dengue as a major public health problem has been most dramatic in the western hemisphere. Dengue fever has reached epidemic levels in Central America and is threatening the United States.
Several factors are contributing to the resurgence of dengue fever:
  • No effective mosquito control efforts are underway in most countries with dengue.
  • Public health systems to detect and control epidemics are deteriorating around the world.
  • Rapid growth of cities in tropical countries has led to overcrowding, urban decay, and substandard sanitation, allowing more mosquitoes to live closer to more people.

  • Increased jet air travel is helping people infected with dengue viruses to move easily from city to city.
Dengue hemorrhagic fever is also on the rise. Persons who have been infected with one or more forms of dengue virus are at greater risk for the more severe disease. With the increase in all types of virus, the occurrence of dengue hemorrhagic fever becomes more likely.

How can dengue be prevented?
There is no vaccine to prevent dengue. Prevention centers on avoiding mosquito bites when traveling to areas where dengue occurs and when in U.S. areas, especially along the Texas-Mexico border, where dengue might occur. Avoid mosquito bites when traveling in tropical areas:

DHF patients in Bangkalan Rising
